The moon has is own gravitational effect which effects any fluid element on earth, the ocean just happens to be the biggest body of fluid...
thats a good question, and I cant answer it, I should have an idea, because Im reading Bill Brysons book "a short history of nearly everything", and I bet its in there somewhere, I just haven't come across it yet !!
