just because physicists there worked that out, doesn't mean thats all, they were doing. its not all work work work, physicists do do pointless stuff like everyone else.

Hehe, cool, I don't mind that, physicist are humans too, just like the rest of us, and humans do some weird stuff when bored. Besides, these calculations probably havent been very dificult, and they were probably just done in their lunch break, but even if it took a while, I think it's okay. They probably had fun while calculating it, and people work better when they're happy

Well, I would think they learned much more than that during the study. The mathematics and physics involved in such a calculation can probably help to explain other, real world phenomenon and predict certain results or effects that I am several PHDs from understanding. :) Or, maybe they were just taking a break and goofing off. ;)
