I'm not afraid of the dark, but I'm guessing it's the element of surprise. In the daylight at least you see them coming!

LOL. Yep. The thing I always tell those scared of the dark, too, is whoever is in that dark room can see NO BETTER than you! lol. In fact, if you're in a familiar place, say you're room or someplace, YOU actually have the upper hand because you know the lay of the land.

im not afraid of the dark, if i do get spooked a little i remind myself that peolpe are the most dangeerous thing in the world. my mind does wander sometimes and things about past scary movies i saw as a kid, it makes me a little less confident. but i get over it the key is to not run. if you start to run it feels like something is chasing you.

Man lives in the sunlit world
of what he believes to be reality.
But, there is, unseen by most, an underworld,
a place that is just as real,
    but not as brightly lit...
    A DARKSIDE.

That is a very natural fear for any non predatory animal. It stems from back in the wilder days of humanity when the animals that would eat you would come out dinner hunting after dark.

I agree and I tell you I have waken up some mornings much more afraid of what I would find in bed when the light came on.

Why are people [okay some] afaird of the future, and no not the floor wax. Sorta, kinda the same - some fear what they can't see. Who knows what dangers lurks if one's vision is impaired? It's an another out of comfort zone phobia.

Humans do not cope very well when their senses are comprised in any way. Most are not very comfortable when they cannot hear what they think they should or even feel as in the case of wearing a pair of thick gloves what they would without them. Most I believe would consider eyesight their most acute sense to detect danger and while the dangers may well be the same in a lit or dark location the fear is that a danger cannot be seen, they don't know what may be there.

The fact is that most of the time the only thing to fear in the dark is what you take with you, however at one time the human species was the prey of wouldn't you know it Nocturnal Hunters, and a portion of that fear is carried over even in our own "Modern Society" however there are those that still live in fear of the dark partly from childhood traumas and parents NOT allowing those children to go to sleep in the dark and be comfortable with it it helps train them later in life NOT to fear the unknown but to look at it as a learning opportunity...
