Depends where you are. In the UK they are active for 3 years but are only removed after four years .

in Australia ..N.S.W. ..the sneaky bastards have made it 5 years now before you get all your points back and at the same time added points to various offenses without giving you any more points on your licence

Forever! Ask how long they affect your drivers license and insurance, that is another matter but just shop around for car insurance and you'll see that they can check back everything that ever showed up on your license. They can only hold against you recent items, not sure how far back in your state though!
