I have HughesNet through Earthlink, and so far I've been very pleased with it. I had it installed about six or seven months ago and it's been very reliable. Sometimes you get a really slow connection at peak times (between 3pm-7pm EST) and you have the Fair Access Policy to contend with but those are really just minor nuisances. My service has never been down (meaning, I can't access the internet at all) and I haven't had any problems with the equipment (dish, modem). That's just my experience, though, and your experience is going to differ wildly based on where you live and your equipment, installation, etc.
I decided to go through Earthlink because they were offering to waive the installation and equipment fee (which is usually around $500 or so) in exchange for a higher monthly price ($100 instead of $70), and I've been with Earthlink on dialup for years and never had any issues. I haven't dealt with HughesNet customer support because I'm going through Earthlink, so I can't comment on their quality of service.
I am a gamer and I wouldn't use it if.
I suffered with dial-up for a very long time and now have At&T DSL. AT&T is the devil but...it beats the heck outta dial up.
If you want to game Hughes Net sucks...it you just want to get around the net faster it's fine I suppose. Still, that's only true if the weather holds.
No it is not, if it rains yoiu cant use the internet at all! DSL is way fster anyway!
