Question

Help answer this question below.

My fiance and I are planning on getting married at our local community hall. It will be a small wedding as cheap as possible, do we pay a justice of the peace or a preacher to come and marry us? I have no idea how it works, thank you.

My wife and I paid a JP.

Even funnier was when my mom re-married though. It was the 3rd marriage for both her and my step-dad and neither was up for the pomp-and-circumstance of another ceremony so they just went to the town offices, paid a fee, signed a couple papers, and walked out man-and-wife; no 'wedding'!

Do whichever you feel comfortable doing. If you want a more secular service, grab your copy of the Yellow Pages and look up some Justices of the Peace. I got married almost two years ago, and we found a JOP in the phone book who married my husband and I for $50! And she came to my house in a snow storm to perform the ceremony.

    Best of luck to you!

We got married in 1981 and did it as cheaply as possible; We married at a friend's home, as they lived on a couple of acres of bush with lots of native trees at the front of their house. We set up trestle tables across their front lawn, and once the actual ceremony was over (paid a celebrant to do it) the 70 guests got stuck into drinks and savories (catered for that bit ourselves, and relatives of friends volunteered to be waitresses and barmen) while we had photos taken. Then on to the local hall for the reception (catered by the local Primary School Mother's Club). I can't remember what we had but it would have been a basic 3-course dinner. We'd hired a band. At about 8pm another 70 or so guests arrived and joined in the party.... at the time I was working in a factory, so my workmates volunteered to cater for the party and did a brilliant job ( some were there for the whole event, others came for the evening bit). At the time I was a divorcee with boys aged 12, 10 & 9 but my husband hadn't been married before. Trust me, we had very little disposable income but managed to pay for this ourselves with the help of family and friends. You can have a lovely wedding without spending a fortune!

Being that your AB name is Mrs. Anonymous, I hope the wedding went well and both you and your new husband are adjusting to married life.

It's a challenge to stay married so remember that it is lots of hard work and compromise to make a go at it.

Tell us all the details on how it went if you have a chance.

Your local library will have books on how to plan a classy wedding on the cheap.

Good luck for now and forever.

Yes. In our area wedding officiants charge about $400. I don't know about a JOP. But consider that if you got married in a church or temple. you'd have to make a donation anyway.
