  • G'day Anna Illa, Thank you for your question. It is a hereditary disease mainly affecting the lungs. If I didn't, I would find out. You have my sympathy. I have two nephews with muscular dystrophy. Regards
  • Here's the little bit I know about it, and I'm hoping you'll tell me more: it's a hereditary disease that involves thick mucus and a weak immune system with chronic lung infections. It mainly affects the lungs and the digestive system. The endocrine system is compromised too. Sometimes people with CF get lung transplants. There isn't yet a cure. I'm sorry to hear about your brother, but very glad he has you to care about him.
  • the first answer is totally correct, Im very sorry to hear that your brother has cystic fibrosis, My heart does a lurch every time I hear some one has it. A good friend of mine's daughter died two years ago from cystic fibrosis, she was 18. It is such a cruel disease. It is usually diagnosed shortly after birth from a blood test taken off the new born.
  • Anna, please don't let the few people who misunderstand your question put you off to AB. It is not unsual to have people sounding off on other people, whatever their reasons are. No, I agree, there is no call for it, but there are MANY many more people on AB who DON'T take that attitude. So just stick with us, OK? There was NOTHING wrong with your question OR your answer so just let it roll off your back, as you can see, it was a mistake on their part, not you, OK? Hang in there, Anna. AB is with you! *SMILES*

  • I had a cousin by marriage who had it. When she was born, they said she wouldn't survive into her teens. She lived into her thirties, earned a Master's degree and had a career before she died. She was a beautiful, loving person, and she is very much missed. It is a rotten disease, but the treatments keep improving and life expectancy keeps rising. With any luck, your brother may live a normal life span. Yes, he is suffering. We all suffer to some level. But if you don't let suffering make you bitter, it tends to make you a beautiful, empathetic, and loving person. Enjoy your brother for all of what makes him who he is and enjoy him for as long as you have him. Otherwise, you might miss out on something really beautiful for worrying about what he doesn't have or isn't. On the flip side, I also knew someone with CF who made his whole life about CF. A friend of mine was dating him some years ago. He was 21 at the time, and his pick up line was something about already having exceeded his life expectancy and was designed to make girls pity him. He was refusing to continue his treatment and was basically trying to commit suicide by CF. He wasn't a pretty picture and he wasn't someone I wanted to be around. He was bitter and angry. He made my friend's life miserable for several months, until she finally wised up that his problems and his suffering had nothing to do with CF and moved on.
