  • I remember reading once that the earth has been around roughly 6 billion years. In that same article it said earth should naturally last about 12 billion because of the sun in our solar system reaching a point of supernova. So I guess doing the math we have roughly 6 billion years left.
  • I think I've read or heard that it's 4-5 billion years so you better start packing for the trip to Earth Jr. :D
  • As the Sun ages, it is going to get brighter. As it does so, it is going to heat the Earth more intensely which will cause Earth's average temperature to rise. This will eventually boil away the oceans and then the atmosphere rendering Earth unable to support life. It is estimated that Earth will loose the ability to support life within only another billion years (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/specials/washington_2000/649913.stm). Earth will go on from here. It may even survive the death of the Sun in about another 5 billion years, but it will do so as a barren, lifeless hunk of rock.
  • As we know it: Probably not long. As a hunk of celestial debris: Maybe lasting after the expansion of the sun.
  • My mum once asked me this question,"How long do you think the earth would last until it is burned out of life and matter?" I answered her(That time I was just joking),"Mum, why do you care anyway? Your lifespan can't be able to outlast a planet's lifespan, right?" But when I started taking Biology lessons this year, I started to take this matter seriously. What if humans die out? There will be no life at all in the solar system, and we would have to wait for about another 6 billion years for a planet same as the old earth to be borned, and humans would turn into cavemen again. How do we solve this problem? But I guess there is no solution. No science could ever overpower the mighty earth. Estimation for Earth to die from now:Roughly 6 billion years.
  • Well you are all forgetting the end of earth as we know it. December 21, 2012. The last day. lol
