George Washington studied military arts early in life. He joined the King's Army as a young British soldier at the age of 16 and became a lieutenant colonel by the age of 22 (in 1754). He fought in the French and Indian War and served as an aide under British General Edward Braddock. He retired from the British military after sustaining an injury and remained a farmer and local politician in the colonial government until in 1775 when the Continental Congress formed and elected Washington, a Virginia delegate, to become Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army due to his experience as a former British soldier.
