  • Because you were a consultant while not employed, you are considered by the IRS to have been in business for yourself. Therefore, you must file Schedules C and SE for the income reported to you on the 1099-MISC. The W-2 income will be reported separately on line 7 of the 1040. You will be able to claim expenses incurred while a consultant against your consultant income.
