Because the name "soccer" is derived from "Association Football", shortened to "Assoc" and then simplified to soccer. The name was intended to differentiate it from other forms of football, such as Rugby Football. But nonetheless, formally speaking soccer is "just" a form of football. Oh, well don't i feel like a ditzy blonde now. I heard something about why America is the exact opposite of England though. I think the people that settled here way back in the day where so tired of England that they completely rebelled against its custom and created their own. Not very creatively though. But thats the best I know.
