Beatles for sure. His partnership with Lennon was one-in-a-million and I think that is important.

Queen are another great example, they were a restraining and modifying influence on each other. Take May's solo stuff which you can imagine Freddy would have radically altered if they had been Queen songs.

James Hetfield made a telling comment when he discussed bringing songs to a band. You turn up with a demo, on tape or whatever, and present it as "here is my heart on a tape" and everyone else starts pulling it apart and criticising. Not a great feeling until what comes out the other end is even more beautiful than the original attempt.

I think the Beatles were the same. The whole being greater than the sum of its parts.

He did fine when he was with the Beatles. But I liked him even more when he was with Wings. Because it seemed to me like he could do more and I don't think he really had to answer to anybody.

In my opinion, the quality of his work declined gradually and precisely in the order you mention in your question.

Better out of music entirely. John Lennon was way better than him, much more artistically inclined, and McCartney pissed over his grave more than once.

Apples and oranges (no pun intended). Paul with John was an awesome combo. As part of Wings he had solo control over things and he excelled again. But the Linda factor detracts from overall appreciation of Wings. Solo he has not been as good.

The thing about the Beatles is that despite their occasional animosity towards each other, they had amazing musical and collaborative chemistry as a band. The band was greater than the sum of its parts.

Therefore, I personally believe that NO former Beatle was as good post-Beatles as the Beatles were.

In The Beatles obviously. His later work is pretty bad... He's still Paul McCartney though, and I'd love to go and see him perform one day. He would sing some Beatles songs, and for that I can sit through his other rubbish. I want to hear Hey Jude live. =D

Paul needed the edge of Lennon to be truly great. They both proved that their partnership was the real magic, as both of their solo careers lacked the sound of genius present in Beatles' music.
I think the same can be said of all of them. Inidividually they were talented and above the crowd, but together they were one incredible creative force that hasn't seen a match in any genre since.

Wings for sure. For those of you who answered Beatles well obviously because thats what you want it to be. Thats what you know and thats what you like. Everybody likes the Beatles sure, but have you really gotten into wings? Ram, Venus and Mars, and Band on the Run have to be the high point of Paul McCartney's career. There are so many unique sounds and harmonys, the music comes alive in your mind. Paul and John worked good together, but I think Paul and Linda worked better. Everybody hears the typical wings songs: Jet, Band on the Run, Silly love songs and thinks thats Wings. Listen to some good ones: Mrs. Vanderbilt, Mamunia, Heart of the country, Magnito and Titanium man, what about Monkberry moon delight? Wings is a great band, just overlooked...

With the Beatles. I don't think he ever hit that caliber again. Except a few songs. But he is still amazing all around.
