Starlings and ravens can hoarsly mimic voices aside from the parrots and mynah birds. The larger parrots tend to be more talkative, but if you spend a lot of time with the little ones, like budgerigars (called parakeets in the US) they can learn quite a bit. In another common pet bird, the cockatiel, female cockatiels tend not to be as vocal as males, though there's no guarentee any bird will talk. There are 20 year old grey parrots who can make the noise of every squakey door and electronic beep, but never say word. Amazon parrots are very active and excited birds, and I know one who talks ALL DAY long. He will sing opera, then have a pretend phone conversation, then talk about taking a shower, and it never, ever, ends. Macaws, in my experience, don't have the same clarity of voice that the greys and amazons have, nor do they get as detailed a vocabulary. My grey doesn't talk all day long, but she will string together words she knows to let me know what she wants, such as "Dinner! Let's go! Connie! Come here!" Or "want some water! Shower! Water up!" Many parrots have this kind of associative ability, but I haven't heard of it in the extremly clear mimicing mynah birds.

In answer to your question, most of the parrots we keep can talk. Cockatoos, Macaws, parakeets, Cocketiels and African Greys are all noted talkers. Also some lesser known birds can and do mimic human voices crows and mynah birds are also noted talkers and they are NOT parrots.

Parakeets, cockatoos, cockatiels and a few other species can be trained to speak, though the most talkative ones I've seen are the classical parrots.

There is a quite amazing short film, called Einstein, which you can vieuw via Google: Parrot Einstein. Try it, you're in for a laugh. But don't try to imagine such a bird in your house, talking like that the whole bl****y day!

Not just parrots talk. Crows can mimick and "talk" and have the abilities almost as good as a parrot. I have an African Grey and they're supposed to be the best Talking bird, i read once of a bird that had an insane ability to talk with a vocabulary of like 1,000 words. i also read that the oldest parrot alive belonged to Winston Churchill and still speaks anti-nazi propaganda.

Less than 10% of all parrot species can talk, they include macaws, amazons, and African gray parrots. Hill mynahs can also talk.

I happen to have a female cockatiel that says alot of stuff and that also breaks her words down and puts them together, some of her phrases include, "smile for me daddie, what you looking at, let me see your grills, let me see your what, ya ya ya grillz, momma go bye bye, momma go to walmart, pengiun go too, penguin go bye bye, step up, come here, come in, hello, hi, momma's pretty bird, mommas pretty baby, momma love her, momma kisses (and then she put her beak to my lips and makes a kissing noise), this is just a few of what she can do. I have been told that female cockateils do not talk, i would love whoever that said that to come to my house for a day. I am making a web site with all of her phrases and her doing them. It is quite funny, we also have a male parakeet that is starting to talk, he says come here and penguin... (Penguin is our female cockateil she is 6 months old and Gary is our parakeet he is 8 months old, and we have a new baby cockateil, Gilligan and he is 2 months old.)
