I don't think root beer will turn your teeth into yellow, but here's the list of foods that will definitely make your teeth yellow. Dark drinks such as Tea, Coffee and Red Wine are obvious culprits of tooth staining. As are acidic fruit juices, orange juices, fizzy drinks and even beer can contribute to staining. One way to remedy this is to swill some water round your mouth after drinking these to avoid the staining from taking hold, also drinking some drinks through a straw can protect the front teeth from becoming discoloured.
Some antibiotics and over the counter medications can cause your smile to become tarnished. Especially the antibiotic Tetracycline, though this is more common is small children, but its derivative Minocycline is known to cause a bluish-grey stain on teeth in adults. Some antihistamines can also cause teeth staining. If you believe your medications are staining your teeth there are always other alternatives so make an appointment with your dentist.
Fluoride is very good for our smiles and strengthening our enamel. Too much Fluoride can lead to chalky white spots developing on your teeth, though this is quite rare in adults and more associated with children. This is normally due to using toothpaste with a high level of fluoride too frequently or from drinking water with high concentrations of fluoride. To lessen the chance of these spots appearing on your teeth it is recommended that you use a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste each time you brush.
Ageing and genetics play a part in how white your teeth are and unfortunately with age, the enamel ends up wearing over time and the natural yellow or brown colour of the underlying dentin layer ends up showing through. Genetics also determines not only how white your teeth naturally are or whether your enamel is thicker or thinner and obviously the thicker the enamel the longer the wearing of the enamel will take to happen.
Heavily pigmented foodstuffs such as Cranberries, Blackberries and Soy Sauce will stain your teeth and very quickly, so it is advised that you brush your teeth straight after eating these foods. The rule of thumb is that if something can stain your carpet, it can also stain your teeth.
Damage to your teeth, such as from a fall or an accident can cause tooth discolouration. Even procedures such as root canal can cause yellowing of the teeth, if the tooth is dead, i.e.) the nerve is not living anymore it will discolour. Although accidents cannot be prevented, if you make sure you practise good oral hygiene there will be no need for invasive dental treatments and you will not end up with discoloured teeth.
Poor dental hygiene is an important factor in tooth staining. Not brushing in the right technique and not flossing allows stain producing substances to build up on your teeth and the collection of bacteria can result in unsightly yellow and green stains. You should gently (not too vigorously) brush your teeth for no less than three minutes to guarantee that all the debris build up from food and drink has been removed.
