I did have, then I found out that phobias are largely due to stresses in childhood, when you feel you have been robbed of your security. I worked through this, and while I cannot say I LOVE heights, I can do a lot of things I never could have in the past, climb ladders, go up buildings, stand at the edge of lookouts etc

  • Not so much a fear of heights, but a fear of falling. I'm cool if I'm enclosed...or have a high barrier, like up on the observation deck of the Empire State Building...and up in the Arch here in St. Louis. But, if I were on a high place with no fence, barrier, wall, etc.,...I'd have a panic attack.

I think so. For example, I'd never ever go out onto that new attraction they've built at the Grand Canyon.

Me..except in a plane. Let me tell you how lame I am...if I am looking through a magazine and I come upon a view looking down from a building or a bridge my knees get weak..one time at Disneyland I rode on the people mover and when I got off at the other end my knees buckled and my date caught me before I fell! :)

I'm afraid of heights, but I always forget that I am. I have climbed walls to get into a Quarry cave then was to afraid to get down. Once in a high rise building I looked out the window then that night I couldn't sleep because I kept feeling like I was falling I had to sleep on the floor. Another Time I climbed up a forest fire out look station and when I got to the top I was so scared I had to sit on the floor and go down the steps on my butt. When I sky and have to ride the sky lifts I always fight the feeling of jumping. It is so weird. I can ride on roller coasters and laugh all the way. I can climb anything, but when I get to the top I freeze.

    I'm afraid of widths.

No really though, I can't stand heights. I can't even look up at tall buildings without almost having a panic attack. I think I have genuine vertigo. I can't go near the railiing at Niagara Falls. I can't llok up at the CN Tower from underneath...I'd fall over...it's very strange.
I'm okay flying though, strangely enough.

  • When I was little I saw a man jump out of an airplane at a skydiving show. His chute didn't open and he fell within 20 feet of where I was watching. I will never forget that.

I get squeamish on highway flyovers, pedestrian bridges, ladders (not bad), some balconies, and other high places. I get nauseous when I watch workers on a skyscraper working without any kind of visible restraint. I've been in therapy and it used to be a lot worse.

    It's been almost 45 years.

No but I know a guy who is afraid of heights and one time he was over at my house helping us build a shed and he wanted to help put siding on which required him to climb a ladder. Well he put aside his fears and climbed the ladder slowly- he was REALLY nervous though, but he refused to come down. Anyway shortly after he actually fell off the ladder, he was ok, but that just confirmed his fears. And to this day he hates heights and wont touch a ladder.

If I'm at the top of a 200 foot ladder on a windy day I'll have a genuine fear of heights, but I think that's a natural fear, not a phobia

Definitely.More than a single flight if stairs makes me nervous. But not planes, of thy look solid. But a helicopter made me nervous, and a balloon was terrifying.

I have an odd fear and lack of fear mix. If I am standing on somthing that is connected to the earth (building, cliff, etc) is does bother me. But get me in a plane or helicopter I am fine.

I think almost anyone would if the situation was precarious enough.

Usually I don't consider myself as having a fear of heights.

If I was in Lhasa, Tibet at 14,400 feet above sea level I wouldn't be feeling the least bit acrophobic but if I was standing on top of a wobbly 100' pole I sure would be. ;)

I'm also comfortable with herbally induced internal heights. ;)

I do not, have not, though I may well develop it in the future.

Since I was a child, I loved heights, and would climb trees and fall and break bones, but then get up and climb it again.

I did, however, have a bizarre fear of teddy bears for a long time. Teddy bears and Cabbage Patch Kids... They still unsettle me, but they don't make me burst into tears like they did when I was 3.

Depends... If there's something I consider solid to hold onto or touch, NO. And I have no problems in planes. I also remember being in a helicopter over Gettysburg and not being afraid when I was younger.

When I was a kid we went to Niagra Falls, the Grand Canyon, etc. The "observation decks" were a bit scary - walking up to the edge, but once I got the rail, and it felt solid, I was fine.

Used to work on the 16th floor of a building. I could walk BY the windows (1 foot off the floor to 1 foot off the ceiling), but if I looked OUT of them, standing by them, I had to at least be able to touch the wall.

And, looking OUT from a height doesn't bother me... It's looking DOWN than does. Phobia? I don't think so. Just the "butterflies" from my stomach to my shoulders! LOL

I'm terrified of them. Pretty much.

Sometimes I get dizzy just climbing the stairs. I could be a lot worse, though. My mum is awful with them.

My friend's whole family has a deadly fear of heights, it's really interesting that all five of them share a similar fear, but that is why I always help them hang up Christmas Lights LOL.
