Question

Help answer this question below.

Is it only in my line of work, or do all companies these days expect those who are able to constantly pick up the slack of inferior personnel to save labor hours with no appreciable reward for doing so, other than the right to keep your shifts?

  • I constantly had to pick of the slack for others in my last job. It was ridiculous. I didn't have to worry about losing my shifts, but the slackers had a "let's look busy" plan that seriously backfired on them and my employer when I took Family Friendly Leave (FFL). Doh! Then I quit and. . .double doh!

Fairly common. I have found in many places your abilities and work rate are irrelevant it is all about your "face fitting".

Nope. It's all of 'em. Downsizing means force multiplying.

They do it in my company as well. We constantly have to pick up the slack of the old man who "works" with us, since he is in a protected age class. If they would document his lack of skill to complete the jobs they would have cause, but they are still afraid of an age discrimination lawsuit, so we have to do all the work while he shuffles around like an Alzheimers patient! AND gets paid for it!

That has been S.O.P. in any job I've ever had ever since I was 14 years old, MG...what else is new? You know I'm 70, so that's a lot of years of work. Of course companies want to get the most out of you...if you're capable and willing they will work you to death. Some, few, rare companies are employee-oriented..the vast majority are stockholder-oriented! :( That means bigger profits, of course..because the same amount of work gets done at lower overhead cost to the company.

It has always been like this. Unions make the problem worse by their basic premise that everyone is equal..that means that it is much harder to get the deadwood working and reward the good people (Please don't get me wrong here..I am more pro union than anti union--it is just one of the areas unions fail in).

I think it happens everywhere. I know my mother has that problem. She's quit four jobs because she ended up having to do the work of her underlings, simply because it needed to get done no matter what, or she would get in trouble, and it's still a problem for her in her current job. I know, because she complains to me about it every day...
