  • Depends on how you go about it, but if you are starting from age 18 with A-levels, normally aroundfour years. You can either go via a university degree in primary education- which will take 4 years rather than the more usual 3. You would spend some of this time gaining practical experience as a teaching assistant in a school- some are "sandwich" courses where the whole of one year is spent on a work placement at a school. Alternatively you can do a three year degree in any subject (although conventional subjects such as English are prefered to say, equine studies) and then apply for a teacher training course, which will take you just over a year. If you are older than 21 and have workplace experience you may be able to by-pass the degree requirement and go straight to teacher training, although they may recommend a years foundation course before beginning full training.
