I rub them with a paper towel after I've washed them to make sure they are clean before I eat them. Doesn't matter to me if they are shiny, actually...

It's a good idea to actually peel your apples before eating them. Most apples bought from a shop, have a very thin layer of wax on them, to make the apples very shiny before being shipped. Don't believe me? Scrape the skin of an appple very gently with a knife and you will see.

To remove the wax. It is not harmful. The white residue (wax) reacts to an overexposure to heat or moisture by turning white. According to Produce Marketing Association and the Produce for Better Health Foundation, this whitening is safe and is similar to that of a candy bar that has been in the freezer. Most apples have a wax covering—natural or commercial wax. The wax covering protects the fruit from moisture loss and decay.

If you can't wash it, rub it! It helps wipe off the fly turds.

So you can see the worm hole easier to avoid it. Just got to remember it is better to find a worm in your apple than to find a half worm.
