    Forget the language that you speak in, and learn it in realation to nothing else.

    It is its own thing and the French are big on saying that while learning it. Speak and learn it, as if it were your only language and do not translate anything into your native tongue. Then emerse yourself in it and speak it in your home.

    Start with the alphabet then the simple kindergarten things and move on to grammar and the rest.

    PBS has a course called French in action. that is excellent.

    Go to France and live amongst Non English speaking French people for a while.

    French immersion.

    That's is how it's taught here in Canada. Go to a French School (or École) where the teachers only speak French for one year. (It helps if you have five or six channels of French TV to watch for "homework".)

    Anything other than this (or philosopher-saint's) solution requires a lot of dedication and perseverance.
