"Gin gwai", the Japanese version of "The Eye", (much better than the American version). For a fairly decent ghost movie, try "Dead Birds", (with Henry Thomas and Isaiah Washington), or the original "The Haunting", (with Julie Harris, in black and white ... just watch them at night with most of the lights turned off).
I also like the original "Salem's Lot" quite a bit (with David Soul and Lance Kerwin). The new one isn't quite as good, but it's okay.

Cannibal Holocaust, Eraserhead, Jacob's Ladder, Men Behind the Sun...although that last one is more a documentary then a movie, and is not much fun at all.

  • I just watched Saw I II & III
I think they were pretty good, but not very scary at all.. just gross. I'm after 4 now for the mystery behind the whole story.
28 days later is pretty good
    The Excorsism of Emily Rose
It's hard for me to make any real recomendations because nothing scares me any more. I grew up during the Slasher movie era.. go Freddie and Jason!
The original Nightmare on Elm Street is a good classic

If you want to be scared, look up images of diseases on the internet. Flesh eating bacteria photos are extremely disturbing and when you read how many things can go wrong with the human body, it will scare you to death. You will be left wondering not if, but WHEN you are going to fall victim to something horrible. I'm sorry it isn't a movie, but they ARE photos. A never ending parade of gore. You can also go to rotten.com. Happy reading :)

Well if you want to be scared, try Saw III.To be disturbed, any Hannibal movie or Capitivity. For mental scarring,I suggest House of a Thousand Corpses, against my better judgement. Lionsgate is real good for terifficly horrifying movies.Try any of their productions.

RING. Don't take my word for it.... below is from a review of the film when it was first released.

"I'm not easily scared by horror movies, but the classic remake of the 1998 Japanese hit Ring scared the pants clean off me."

PS: The remake is not Japanese and is in English.

    Seconding: Rec,
    Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original!)
    Alien and Aliens
    Hostel
    Eraserhead
    Audition.
    And to contribute:
Ichi the Killer, One Missed Call (both directed by Takashi Miike, the same guy who directed Audition),
Zombie Flesh Eaters (cheesy music, bad acting, but gory as hell and with a damn creepy ending!),
    Freaks,
    Wolf Creek

A movie came out in 1980 called "The Changeling" with George C. Scott.
It's a ghost story, not a gorefest, so if you're looking for gallons of blood, this ain't your movie. But if you want a smart, quiet film that will have you sleeping with the lights on give it a try.

    Yarnlady is happy every day

Most movies with people dressed up in silly costumes and spewing fake slime and blood are not scary. However, the Final Destination movies have a few unexpected ways to die that makes them interesting to watch, but not scary.

It helps if you have someone who knows the most suspense filled scene, and can yell Arghhhhh at the climax of the scene to scare you half to death, that is the best thing.
