absolutely right. In theory a baseball player throwing 90 mph could ride a 60 mph train and so long as the cabin was not windy (ie, windows and doors are closed) then he could throw a 150 mph pitch. You ever sit in the car and toss something around when you were little? Note that the ball or whatever did NOT go flying to the back of the car just cuz it was thrown while moving.

these were actually how i learned this tidbit of physics, it started as an example of how air affects things falling based on the old 'if a feather and a bowling ball were dropped in a vacuum' science

Yeah ... same here , but unfortunately the same isn't applicable to modern physics . You can't relate it to your day to day examples . In fact it is usually quite the opposite of what we might intuitively feel .
