Question

Help answer this question below.

I had my tragus pierced exactly a week ago and it is really swollen and it is leaking puss or something of that nature. Im worried it could be infected. my doctor gave me antibiotics and some ointment to put on it... Is that normal for a piercing?

It's a risk. Not normal or abnormal however, rare as majority of people don't get it. You can't blame the person who did the piercing because you may be sensitive to piercings. On the other hand, it could be the needle, but you will never know unless you track it down and get it cultured.

Some swelling is normal, and so is leaking of lymph fluid, but pus is not normal. Follow your doctor's advice, I'd do sea salt soaks in addition to their recommendations, and keep you hands away from it. If you want to take it out, wait until your infection is gone, as it can be dangerous to remove it sooner.

- Well I've been take the antibiotics and it seems to be getting better. my doctor told me to take it out but i wouldnt let him. how long do I soak it in sea salt?

- 1/8tsp salt to 8oz very warm water, for 5-10 minutes 2x a day, then once a day when it's better.
  
  If the leaking stuff is opaque, yellow or greenish and smelly it's pus. If it's clear yellowish, then that's lymph. Just clarifying because so many people assume infection when there's none. Pus, severe swelling, redness, heat, and pain the the surrounding area are symptoms of infection. Lymph, slight swelling, pinkness, and tenderness are normal parts of the healing process.
  
  Sadly, many doctors tell people to remove infected piercings. But since the jewelry is holding open the wound so it can drain, removing it can trap infection inside and make it worse.

I am not the one to ask, young friend. I don't think 'piercing' is normal and am at a loss why people do it. You certainly have an infection...and all your doctor could give you was anti-biotics and ointment. It will probably be alright...in time. And you can tell all your friends about what a time you went through making yourself look strange....(?) OK, now you can start minusing the old fart. That will teach him a lesson! (smile)

And all my friends love my new piercing and if I have an infection it is worth it cause I love my new piercing. Im sorry your a complete jackass!

- Yes, I am sorry too. And I am truly sorry you have an infection. You should have been told that you probably would have. The yahoo person who punched the hole in you should have told you a lot of things...but, he/she did not. They got your money, so what do they care? And are you seeing your doctor on insurance, mandbon? Probably. And who is paying for it? Everyone who pays premiums to that insurance company is paying for it....and others...and others...And people like you are raising their premiums! Sorry, hon, but you are a little parasite. And your little silver thingy is ugly as sin! What guy do you really think would want to kiss a thing like that? Oh, yeh...a stoned guy. Can you think of any others?

This process is totally normal. I have had multiple piercings and was worried about one of the first ones I had done. I called my tatoo parlor and they said it is a process known as Lymph. It means that it is healing. As long as the puss isn't green or have a strange odor to it, you are good.

If it's been a week, you should go back to your piercer and have them look at it. Mine did the same thing about three days after I pierced, so I went to the piercer and they said it was fine, but if it continued to come back.
