Supposedly, due to temperatures, the volume of gas that you pump early in the morning is less, so it's cheaper. Later in the day, when it's warmer, the gas expands, making it more expensive to get the same amount of gas.

i heard that gas stations have the cheapest gas between 9pm and 11pm .. and generally, in my area that seems to be true

I have never heard of that. All I know is that you are not supposed to fill up your tank when there is a huge truck refilling the station. I guess it mixes up all the junk at the bottom of the big tanks and that is really bad for your engine.
