According to Christianity, humans were created knowing God personally. It certainly seems from anthropology that ancient humans did have religious beliefs. In Neanderthal burials, the bodies were flexed into foetal position, and buried with implements and floral tributes. This certainly shows that they felt that life was not over, that the dead were being reborn, and that flowers were important to put on the grave as a tribute even hundreds of thousands of years ago. But, religious beliefs, like many traditions, were for most of history, passed on orally. Which means we cannot ask Neanderthal man what he was thinking of when he buried his dead that way, sadly. We can only make a few surmises: that he believed in an afterlife, and mourned the loss of the individual.
