  • They are not named after a bird at all. The name most likely comes from the latin, Insularia Canaria meaning Island of the Dogs. Due to the extensive population of large dogs found there when it was discovered. (source: wikipedia)
  • The Canary Islands are in the Atlantic.
  • The Canary Islands named after canines are not in the Pacific at all. They lie in the Atlantic Ocean just off the west coast of Africa and were the stepping off point for Columbus' 1492 voyage to the new world. I don't think there are any Canary Islands in the Pacific, but if there are, they were probably named after tweety birds since there was no extensive exploration of the Pacific until after Drake crossed it in 1588, and Drake didn't speak Spanish.
