When you are in a position where you are looking for a lawyer, you aren't exactly running a background check on him... nor can you without his social security card.

That would be an impossibility in my state. Once an attorney is convicted of a felony, they are disbarred and no longer allowed to practice.

AFAIK, a felony conviction disqualifies someone from serving as an officer of the court, so you couldn't use one that was for criminal law in any case. Now, for administrative law or probate... It would have to depend on the crime.
