  • This question comes up a lot when talking about constellations in space. The answer that both are factors. Take a star for example. The brightness of a star at its source is called its absolute magnitude. How bright the star appears by the time it reaches you is called the Apparent Magnitude. Altering either the size or the intensity of the light at its source play a role in perception of the object. This concept can be applied to visual perception on Earth. Size and distance will determine how large something appears in your eyes, whether it be due to actual dimensions or a trick of the eye.
