  • Fat Chance implies the odds are 'heavy' against you or 'heavy' for the other ... Slim Chance implies you have little or no chance to do the deed
  • Actually, I think the answer is more along these lines. "Slim chance" is what you say when you feel something is unlikely and you want to be clear about it. "Fat chance" eally does mean the opposite of slim chance, but it is said ironically. Irony means you say the opposite of what you mean, but do it in a tone of voice that indicates your intent.
  • Slim chance: "no way are you going to land that job". "but, maybe". Fat chance: "your odds of landing that job is "0".
  • They don't mean the same thing really though I don't think. Slim chance more so means it's not definately no but probably will end up as no. Fat chance means No way-straight up.
  • Because one ("fat") is a sarcastic exaggeration.
  • Hi Davoomac. Slim chance to get bad things and fat chance to get good things. It runs simultaneously at that particular time. From me, goodsign http://www.mylot.com?ref=goodsign
  • slim = maybe fat = Buckley's
  • I think the first expression is more literal, the second one is used sarcastically or ironically.
  • Maybe because both terms refer to "extremes" - but on opposite ends of the spectrum??? Good question!!
  • These are ill defined colloquial or slang phrases that can mean different things to different individuals. "Fat Chance" means no chance. "Slim Chance" means it is possible but highly unlikely. So, to me they are not the same.
  • Is it? I thought a slim chance was *just about do it* and fat chance was *no chance at all*!! lol
  • Good question and I don't know the answer. I have never said "slim" chance though...only "fat" chance. I shall have to contemplate my choice and try to figure out the reason! :)
  • "Fat chance" is ironic, so it means the opposite of what it says. That was easy -- easy as pie -- a piece of cake. (Thank you, George Carlin.)
