  • Should they learn our laws and rules, yes. Should they lose their customs and culture, no. In fact, we have a lot to learn from some cultures when it comes to the way we relate to our families.
  • They don't have to leave their old country customs behind, but if they want to come here they should speak English and adjust their lives to the way we live here, not us adjusting to theirs.
  • Of course not! Keeping in touch with old customs is just as important, if not moreso, than embracing the new. This is not to say that one should completely reject American customs though. If you want to live in a new place, you have to adapt to it, or you'll end up feeling completely alienated/out-of-place. The best thing to do in the situation is to learn to combine old and new traditions into something that makes you comfortable with American culture, without feeling unfaithful to your own. Besides that, there are all sorts of social issues involved. Things acceptable in one culture may not be acceptable here, which would create problems with fitting in and being accepted as a member of American society. Or, if it's the other way around, one has to learn not to be offended by things present in American culture that may not be present in one's own. I'd have more to say on this, but it's late and I'm sleepy. May edit later...
  • It's not a problem to observe them as long as their is no conflict with American laws or customs. The real problem is when immigrants - and I am one - start getting strident that every AMERICAN should start observing them. Either accept the totality of what makes America the country we chose to come to - or quit whining about how bad you have it because everyone won't change to suit you.
  • America was founded on those very customs and cultures. We all came here from somewhere back through our lineages. It's what makes our country so unique. However, people that come here forget what America is about. It's not just a place to come and hide from persecution. We provide safe harbor for many immigrants. I think it's only fair they try to be APART of our country. Share with us their customs and cultures but also learn and accept ours so that we can even improve further as a country from where we are today.
  • No, however when you move to any new country you adopt new customs, some will be better than those you have, some will not be better. That is what makes Travel so wondeful, by combining old customs, and new customs into a life style, you get the very best people in the world, unique, understanding, loving people.
  • provided that they are legal, no but one should try to fit into the population as a whole, speak English, not be rude or obnoxious, conform the hygine standard of the US, etc And don't be a pu**y and try to get Holidays like Halloween outlawed, because they offend your tender sensibilities
  • While a policeman, I was dispatched to an unknown disturbance call in a southern California city. I a back yard. They had slit the throat of a goat, had wire tied to each leg, and were holding it over a fire to burn the hair off before they got down to roasting. So, yes, there are definitely some customs they should leave behind.
  • Of course not. As long as they obey the law and try to acclimate, they can do as they please.
  • They should adopt the new customs of their new home but they should keep as much of their old customs as are possible and practical. It would be a great shame if their native culture had to be abandoned completely.
