Sounds like a power problem. Either that or a switching issue. Either way if it is not booting up even a bit (nothing, not even the BIOS screen showing on monitor) then chances are the hard drive is still good. Get a friend who knows computers to remove the hard drive and mount it in another computer. You should be able to access the data on it.
Hopefully it wasn't a power surge that caused the original malfunction as that could have affected the hard drive. You should always use a power conditioner (surge suppressor or UPS) with your computer to guard against that sort of thing.
Hope this helps.
Take the hard drive out and put it as a slave in another machine. If the hard drive is good you should be able to access your data.
You might have a bad power supply or a bad mother board.
Check the hard drive cables inside make sure the are not falling or are not too loose.

You're reading 4 year old emachine desktop. when we press power button hard drive light blinked. Book said to unplug for 10 seconds, did that, now absolutely nothing happens. Is it completely shot, something else we can do, or are we able to get our files off of it?

Well, I haven't lived here very long and don't really know anyone, and my only other computer is a laptop. Everything else on the power strip is working. When I press the power button, absolutely nothing happens. Not a beep or anything. I can manage to get the hard drive out (I had classes that included building computers to be an IT tech for EDS, but ended up in a different job), but I don't know where I'd get another computer. There is a place in town that fixes them for a decent price (we live in a VERY small town, so I'm surprised they're even there) maybe I'll take it in. It's mostly just my kid's and husband's music that I'm worried about...everything else has been moved to my laptop!

You could buy an external HD enclosure and mount it in that. You would be able to plug it into your laptop and access the data that way. It would cost about $30-$40 and make sure you get the right kind for your drive. IDE if the drive is IDE or EIDE (sometimes called PATA) and considering the age of your computer chances are more than good that it is an IDE drive.
