I've always thought it's so, while the dominant hand is doing something complex, the other can be quickly lifted to view time. For instance, while writing with a pen.

It's easier to put on the hand opposite your dominant hand. Plus, it doesn't interfere with things like writing when it is on the opposite hand.

I always put my watch on my dominate wrist and never felt right putting it on the opposite wrist.

I always thought it was to make it easier to write because the watch would be on the opposite hand you write with so it would not be as much of a nuisance.
