  • It's not illegal, though the MIAA are trying to imply that it is, as the RIAA are trying to do with music. It comes under what is called "fair use," wherein, if the copy is not shared and you have purchased the original, it is fair use to make a backup for your own purposes and to edit it if you so wish. Even if it were illegal, such a law would need to be broken.
