It is a program established under Republic Act No. 6981, "The Witness Protection, Security and Benefit Act", which seeks to encourage a person who has witnessed or has knowledge of the commission of a crime to testify before a court or quasi-judicial body, or before an investigating authority, by protecting him from reprisals and from economic dislocation.

Many major criminal acts occur frequently in the united states. these crimes would go unsolved, if it were not for informants. informants give information, concerning crime, to law enforcement on the local, state and federal level. up front, on the federal level, some informants have an agreement that for their information, their identity would be forever secret. in major criminal cases, these informants are enrolled into the fbi's federal witness protection program. this program is administered through the u. s. marshal service and informants are protected worldwide. protection of federal informants can go to the extreme. this includes: transferring from one state to another, transferring to another country, complete identity transformation, physical transformation, and even fingerprint reclassification. the life of a federal informant is forever held in secrecy. contacts with the family is forbidden, forever. this program also includes entire families, where a child may have been a federal witness and the family will be forever protected. its an excellent program and has been and will continue to be successful. without the fbi's federal witness protection program, some major crimes in the united states would forever remain unsolved.

Witness Protection simply cannot be. Yes the Government will give the informant new identity and this will apply to his/her family also. However there will come a time say within a few months or a few years when the Government will say..."You are out of the program"...That is when the informents journey becomes a nightmare...Trust me I know!
