The advantages are lower cholesterol, plenty of vitamins and anti oxidants. The disadvantages are gas and a possible lack of protein and fats that your body needs. One must be very careful to include fat and protein when on a vegetarian diet. Also, be careful to stay away from junk food.

Geez, I could write a book on this topic. Anything from ethics to health to convinience of lifestyle. I will say this, a few years ago I almost died due to liver issues, my doctor told me that one of the only reasons I lived was that I had been a vegetarian so long. My liver has trouble processing toxins, it's a family thing. I drank alcohol and smoked, but not to excess. I was traveling a lot and grabbing food as I could (keeping vegetarian). It caught up with me. I was diagnosed in Intensive Care. The doctor told my wife that I would be dead in a few days. I had an amazing recovery. The follow up doctor asked me if I had been a vegetarian for a long time, and I said yes. He said that the low cholestoral diet is the thing that saved me.

Hi Ender...how are you? I took a course based on Dr. Gabriel Cousen's book "Conscious Eating" and began eating a vegetarian diet at that time, just over one year ago. As he warned, I had the mistaken notion that on this diet, I wouldn't be getting enough protein. In fact I was and I continue to get more than enough, but now proteins and the rest of my nutrition comes from plant sources. I'm a much happier person, eating no flesh foods, harming no animals and ingesting mostly organic foods with the most bio-available water you can get. Here's a great link that you might like! I think the financial commitment is a BIG advantage. Steak is EXPENSIVE! Disadvantage -- soy is gross, in my opinion, and that's the only thing I can think of to be an effective protein replacement.

My brother became anemic and had to be hospitalized, that's a disadvantage.

As I am a carnavarian for health reasons, let me fill you in. As a vegetarian you will have great difficulty keeping off excess weight. You will be hungry all the time. Your cholesterol will go up, not down. You will be tired and lethargic. You will have vitamin deficiencies. Your teeth will rot. And like very many vegetarians, you will get diabetes. If you think I am making this up, google "What if it's all been a big, fat lie?" Or read "Good Calories, Bad Calories." I hope by this post I can save you from a lifetime of health problems.
