    Hi,

Talc is the softest mineral on our earth.

Talc is a silicate (like many of the earth's most important minerals), and contains magnesium and a bit of water along with the silica and oxygen. Talc is usually associated with metamorphic rocks, and while it is pretty common in nature it is actually rather rare in crystal form

According to one of my favorite references, the softest mineral is carlinite (http://webmineral.com/determin/non-metallic_minerals_by_hardness.shtml). As can be seen there quite a few minerals that are softer than talc. However, talc is the softest of the "common" minerals. I had not even heard of any of the softer minerals until I click on the link of that list.

Wouldn't petroleum count as a mineral?  I should think that that would be regarded as much softer than talc.
