Democracy cannot possibly come to such an openly Capitalistic regime.
Why can't we have a government that really cares what the British people want?

Common Sense - we meet again. If you have views on this issue that are strong enough to lead you to comment on my answer and down-rate it I would have thought that they would be strong enough to prompt you to answer the question directly.
We seem to share an inability to understand what the other has said, because your comment makes no sense to me at all.
My answer is based on the fact that the Electoral College, which elects US Presidents, does not necessarily echo the popular vote, and I have been assured by several of your countrymen that your current President would not have been elected if his election had relied on a straightforward count of votes cast. A true democracy is a system of one man, one vote. Unfortunately your country does not have such a system when it comes to electing what you pride yourselves on calling, "the most powerful man in the world" or, "the leader of the Free World".
You also have a situation where Washington lobbyists, representing big business have a far greater say in the way that the country is run than do the voters. Hence, you cannot reasonably call your country's political system a Democracy - it is not Democracy, it is rampant Capitalism.

That seems to be a fair assesment to me as an outsider. Democracy can only be called that if it relies on the votes of the population with no input from any other more powerful voice. The Labour party in Britain have suffered from this with the trade union lobbyists having a powerful say due to membership numbers within their particular union. If that does not make too much sense I apologise!

It makes perfect sense to me. However, regardless of the power that the TUC once had over the Labour Party, the British Trades Unions have never had the power to overturn the wishes of the people expressed at the ballot box. This, to me, differentiates true democracy from the American version of democracy - in the USA everybody has a vote, but the result of a Presidential Election isn't solely dependent upon the votes of the people, because their stated wishes can be overturned by the wishes of the Electoral College or so-called Super Delegates.
I'm sure that no citizen of the USA will agree with me, but I truly believe that they get conned time and time again because they are so naive as to believe that they live in the Cradle of Democracy when, in fact, they live at the behest of big business and lobbyists.

You are right that many will disagree, but I suppose at least they are patriotic.
by peterpam on March 13th, 2008
i give up.....every time i disagree with someone they just accuse me of downrating their answer........well, i am sick and tired of beginning any kind of civilized conversation with that............
.
all i will say is that STATISTICALLY to win the election without winning the popular vote, you (and your adversary) must be within less than 1% difference...........yes, the votes that elect the president go by who wins state-by-state...
.
maybe it helps to prevent fake ballots from flowing in..........
.
anyway, hope you guys have a good day.
goodbye

Common Sense, When I receive a comment and a rating (up or down) on the same answer at the same time my common sense indicates to me that they have come from the same person. When it is a down-rate and the person who left the comment gives as high a proportion of down-rates as you do I feel even more sure they came from the same source.
However, that wasn't the point I was making, which was, if you feel so strongly you should have answered the question and given everybody the benefit of your opinions.
