There are many reasons why e-mail gets lost, but most lost mail is probably caused by anti-spam measures. This is not only a problem at Hotmail (though they seem to be worse about it than many others), but at any address on the net, and particularly with web-based e-mail.

Most (if not all) anti-spam software also stops a certain amount of legitimate e-mail. If it's on your home machine, you may have an option to look over the "spam" before it's deleted. But the anti-spam software that web-based mail servers use generally doesn't give you that option, it just deletes whatever it thinks may be spam. And all sorts of things could identify an e-mail as spam: Writing the text all in capitals, having too many names/addresses listed in the TO: or CC: fields, having nothing in the FROM: field, having too many exclaimation points at the end of sentences, having certain words in the texts, sending e-mail through a server that someone has used for spam and so has been identified as a source of spam (thereby blocking all mail anyone sends from that server)... the list is long and getting longer all the time.

The best way for your friend to make sure he receives all the mail his friends send is to add them to his Hotmail Safe List:

Log into Hotmail. From the Inbox, click on the Options link in the upper right-hand part of the screen. Then click on the Mail button on the left-hand side of the next screen. Click on the Junk E-mail Protection link and then on the Safe List link. then follow the directions for adding addresses to the Safe List. Mail from anyone on the Safe List will not be deleted.

This won't gurantee that no more e-mails will be lost; a certain number get lost while bouncing around the net for various reasons. But making sure mail from friends can get past the anti-spam software will clear up most of the problem.
