  • Yes. It seems that a bunch of players wore #28. From a guy named Kasey, a "die-hard Cubs fan": "28-Jack Russell, Bobby Sturgeon, Russ Meyer, Jim Willis, Hal Rice, Lloyd Merriman, Glen Hobbie, Bob Will, Billy Ott, Lee Gregory, Roberto Pena, Marty Keough, Jim Hickman, Ron Dunn, Adrian Garrett, Joe Wallis, Jerry Martin, Steve Henderson, Henry Cotto, Chris Speier, Luis Quinones, Mark Grace (there's a note about him below that explains) Mitch Webster, Mitch Williams, Ced Landrum, Kal Daniels, Randy Myers, Pedro Valdes, Roosevelt Brown, Mark Bellhorn, David Kelton, Todd Hollandsworth, and Michael Restovich." I got this list from the "ALL TIME CUBS UNIFORM NUMBER LIST" found at http://ignarski.tripod.com/temprost.html Here's the opening blurb: "This list is current as of June 30, 2006 First a little history. This list started out as a posting on the Cubs newsgroup back in 1995. A person left a message asking about old time Cubs numbers. People started posting the numbers they remembered. Then I got into the act. Since I have been going regularly to Cub games, starting in 1974, and I had most of my old scorecards, I decided to go thru all my old scorecards and make up a list of everyones uniform number. It evolved into a yearly thing with me. I then started keeping a list for myself of everyone who was on the major league roster during the regular season, and what their uniform number was. In 1997, the Cubs helped me out quite a bit. A couple of times during the season, in the game notes, they noted everyone who had worn a particular uniform number (#1 & #23). Since they supplied this information, I guessed that they might have a master list, and I contacted them. They did have a master list, and it was from there that I got the bulk of my information of pre 1974 numbers from. I did, however, find a couple of omissions from their list (Pico wearing 51 in his major league debut, Eckersley wearing 40 when he first came to the Cubs, Grace wearing 28 when he was first called up-something they note in the 2000 Cubs media Guide) and these are included here. I also want to thank Jack Looney, who has helped me fill in missing numbers and corrected some errors on the lists the Cubs provided. If anyone finds any errors of omission or commission in this list, I would really appreciate it if you could let me know. Thank You. For the most part, this list should be in the order a person first wore the uniform number. If a person wore the same number in different stints with the team, he is listed only once and in the order of when he wore the number for the 1st time. I have listed first names for everyone I could find one for. This includes people who were on the active major league roster during the regular season but did not appear in a game. (*As far as I can tell, there is one player that this applies to - #32 Mark Leonette). If there is a (C) the person was a coach. A (M) means manager. If there is a (HC) this lucky person was a Head Coach during the infamous College of Coaches days. If a number has been retired, I have noted that and the person the number has been retired for will be in RED. Please note: several players have worn multiple numbers. Enjoy" Although I don't know Kasey, he seems like an above-board, sincere guy. I believe he's a credible source of information. He likes cows too, which you'll see if you visit the website.
  • As the aforementioned Kasey, I appreciate you coming over to my site and finding the answer. Kasey http://ignarski.tripod.com
