You need to connect the analogue and video line outputs from the camcorder to the line input of the VCR. You do not "tune" the VCR to the camcorder, you use the line input and select it explicitly - usually labelled something like "Input" on the VCR remote.
The camcorder probably has a composite video output, usually colour-coded yellow, and two audio channels (right: red, left: white). If it is monophonic, it will only have a single audio output.
The camera's composite video out connects to the line-input video connector on the VCR and the audio outputs to the line-input audio connectors. If both the camcorder and VCR are mono, you will only have a single audio line. If one is stereo and the other is mono, you will need a 2-to-1 jack to combine the stereo signal into a single mono connection.

You're reading I have a Philips VCR player and I want to tune my camcorder to it but am not having much joy, how can I do this?

Unfortunately my VCR doesn't have video/phono input sockets so I can't connect the camcorder direct to it but as my VCR & TV are connected I thought I could record what I was watching through the TV which does have these socke
