The actual creature itself is beleived to be a Plesiosaurus, a marine reptile that lived long ago. Many believe that the Loch used to open directly to the ocean via large holes deep on the bottom of the loch, or on the sides of the lock shores, and that during the time of the Plesiosaur, several may have wandered in and colonized the Loch. There is no scientific evidence to support that theory, however. Sightings of 'Nessie' have been reported as early as the B.C.'s and early A.D.'s. Because of these very early sightings, it is beleived that there is in fact a colony of large marine reptiles living somewhere in the lock. However, many expeditions have turned up nothing, and the only 'evidence' any sonar turned up was an expedition in 1972, in which it was acknowledged that a VERY large object passed underneath the boat as it was doing a sonar sweep, moving at tremendous speed. Here is a brief excerpt: "In 1972 the Academy of Applied Sciences traveled to Loch Ness. They set up a number of underwater camera's and sonar devices. Sonar "contacts" were made of large objects swimming deep below the surface. The camera's produced a photograph of a huge six foot flipper belonging to a large, unidentified, marine animal." However, the most famous Loch Ness Monster picture, called 'The Surgeon's Photo', taken by Colonel Robert Wilson well over 60 years ago is an admitted fake by the co-collaborater that helped construct the Nessie prop on his death bed in 1993. Because of this turn of events, it is now widely beleived by many monster hunters, skeptics and scientists that the Loch Ness Monster is just a big hoax. Well over 3/4 of all the 'Nessie' pictures have been proven fake, and only a small handful of them remain a mystery.

  • The Loch Ness Monster is a creature or group of creatures said to live in Loch Ness, a large lake in Scotland near the city of Inverness. "Nessie" is generally considered a lake monster. Along with Bigfoot and Yeti, Nessie is perhaps the best-known mystery in cryptozoology.

There's no evidence of a sustainable colony of large creatures in Loch Ness, despite many years of searching. My personal theory is that Nessie is actually the ghost of a dinosaur. It seems as reasonable as any other explanation I've heard
