There are many "traditional types" of Buddhism in Asia. What's different about the west is that you'll find most traditional types being practiced in the west, whereas in Asia, each country has a dominant buddhist traditional type. I've heard it said that European Buddhists are a little more open minded (or is that wilder?) than their North and South American counterparts; Americans, due to the more present (in the culture) nature of Christian ideas of morality, tend to be more conservative than European Buddhists.
