What is Einstein's unified field theory and how do can it be proven?

There are four forces of nature: Gravity, Electromagnetism, and the weak and strong nuclear forces (and four fields to go with them). Electromagnetism and the weak nuclear force have been shown to be two aspects of the same force, the electro-weak force. It was Einstein's dream to unify all four forces, and he spent most of his life trying to do this and create the first Unified Field Theory. But even today, there is no established way to unify gravity with the other forces, although there are competing theories that attempt to do this, for example, M-theory.
