Question

Help answer this question below.

My 5 yr old son quite simply doesnt do as i ask.i can ask him to put his shoes and coat on as we are about to go to school up to 15 times til i have to shout to so he take notice of what i say.he will cry cos i shouted but still won't put them on.pls help

do it yourself!! i know you need to do lots of other things other then put his shoes on but your not getting them done with all the shouting put his shoes on. soon enough he shall do it himself. askk him if he refuses then put his shoes on him telling him that is not acceptable he has to wear his shoes. make sure there is a routine in place and no distractions does he dress himself in every other way?! if yes maybe its his shoes he doesnt like

Get down on his level and make sure he is looking at you. Tell him what you want and then ask him to repeat what you said. Sometimes even if kids don't have a hearing problem they are so involved in what they are doing that they don't hear us.

First, just to double check, make sure it isn't a hearing problem- as in, being physically unable to hear. I doubt that's the issue, but it's best to be safe!

Take away what's distracting him. Also don't yell fifteen times- after the second time, just pick hi up and start dressing him. If all you're doing is using your voice, it won't work well- there's no consequence in voices, usually!

- thanks. i know its not hearing (we tried whispering from a distance something to spark his attention to proove this!) when getting ready for school there are no distractions. theres no tv on, he would just go in his room and kind of just lie around. i know i shouldnt shout but its not in the beginning, only when i finally have had enough of my own voice saying put your shoes on...etc it is making me so very upset that i'm being made angry (by him) all the time.

- If it's just lying around and not actively playing- is he getting enough sleep? I don't think I've ever encountered that in a 5 year old- teenagers, sure, but not that young! If it's just sitting there, you still might want to get it checked out to make sure it's not a physical issue- maybe not hearing, but metabolism or sleeping problems or something like that.
  -And I understand about the anger- one of the reasons I suggested to simply say it twice, and then do it yourself. It cuts short that anger-building time- although putting on clothing can also get annoying, I know!

what is he doing while you are telling him to get ready. like watching tv. try shutting it off or what ever else he is doing so that he will get ready. tell him he cant do what he normaly does untill he gets ready
