  • It isn't really. Muesli for breakfast is cheap. You don't have to buy the top brand. A couple of pieces of fruit and a sandwich made at home cost very little. And a nice curry and rice, also home made, is also inexpensive. Drinking water brought from home costs nothing. I have calculated that we only spend an average of $7 per person in our household per day, and that includes cleaning stuff, and bathroom/vanity necessities. That means that the food comes out as less than $2 a meal. Yet we eat well.
  • Actually, it isn't..if you buy your whole grains from a health food store and cook them from scratch..if you watch for sales at the market you can get some really good deals..if you frequent Farmer's Markets in your local area you can get the freshest organic produce at lower cost than you would at the market...but you have to do your own cooking..you have to learn about things like food-combining and you have to ignore the aisles in the supermarket and shop the perimeter where you will find the produce, meats, dairy products. Junk food ends up being extremely costly because your medical bills increase! :(
  • I know what you're saying. Like making stuff from scratch instead of buying something in a box. It's way cheaper to buy a box of hamburger helper and a pound of hamburger than it is to buy a pound of ground sirloin, a box of high fiber noodles, a package of cheese, an onion, etc... A box of mac and cheese is cheaper than buying all those ingredients separately. Stuff like that.
  • I don't find it so. Good food is basic, unprocessed food, ingredients and how you put them together. You can even grow some of it yourself. Sorry, but I find junk food to be VERY expensive, even the packaging costs a lot. And add in the extra costs like bringing ill-health to you and doctor bills.
  • Indeed. If I had a large family, it might be worth it, but cooking just for myself simply isn't an option. Anytime I buy fresh, most of it goes bad before I can get to it. After all, when's the last time you were able to buy ONE carrot, even at a farmer's market?
  • Absolutely! I think that is why there is such an obesity problem, crappy food is so cheap!! And in the winter produce costs twice as much and the quality is not nearly as good.
