My 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis 5.0 has oil in the air filter compartment. What could be wrong?

    Probably worn rings but Check the PCV Valve too. If it is blocked you get high crankcase pressures and oil in the air filter. 10 minutes and 10 bucks to fix.

    It is probably coming from the breather hose. It sounds like you have a blow-by problem, a pressurization of the crankcase which is caused by worn rings in the engine, not uncommon for this old of a car. There is little to be done, short of an engine rebuild. If the car is still running to your satisfaction, simply clean the filter housing and change filter a little more often.
