I can't offer any books or sites, but if you happen to live near a university, they might have some public lectures you might like. Not class lectures, but people coming in to speak. My university has had a lot of people in about civil rights, political history, so on and so forth...

There's scores of good information on Google Videos. Just search the topic you want to learn more about. It takes a little filtering but I've found some great stuff there, done in an interesting and entertaining way, usually. For the real news, I highly recommend DemocracyNow.org. They will send you the days headlines and highlights from that days show by email. You can get the show on their website.

I recommend not narrowing down any site to just few for your information. It would be wise to use many sites and then judge by the commonality of the information received and then come to your own conclusions.

this is a sit from a guy that's written two great books i own and have read. http://www.uvm.edu/~jloewen/liesacrossamerica.php one is called "lies across america" and the other is "lies my teacher told me". i highly recommend them, they set the record straight on a lot of false teaching of american history. these are a good start i think ;)
