yea you do have to ask the original artist if not they can sue you. and i believe that you have to share profits
It depends if the songs you want to use are copywrited, or in what is called 'Public Domain'. There is a list you can Google for BMI or ASCAP. these are the music protection companies. You may have to pay a small percentage of profits. Public domain usually does not require shared payment. if it gets to be a 'hit', ethically, not legally, is your decision.
