If you want to make a song using parts of other people's songs, do you have to ask the original artist? Do you have to share the profits with them?

    yea you do have to ask the original artist if not they can sue you. and i believe that you have to share profits

    It depends if the songs you want to use are copywrited, or in what is called 'Public Domain'. There is a list you can Google for BMI or ASCAP. these are the music protection companies. You may have to pay a small percentage of profits. Public domain usually does not require shared payment. if it gets to be a 'hit', ethically, not legally, is your decision.
