Wimbledon isn't the one exception. There are still several grass court tournaments, including Queens and the Hall of Fame tournament in Newport, Rhode Island. Even with slams, Wimbledon isn't the only non-hard court tournament. The French Open is played on clay and there is a whole clay court season leading up to the French.
