the exact same thing happenedto me with my 86. Jack up the car just behind the passenger side front wheel. Once under look for a cylinder housed on the underside near the motor. Grab a hammer. Tap the cylinoid and it should release it. The car should then turn over.
The solenoid is a relay that sends power to the starter. Usually if it goes bad all you will hear will be a clicking. Since your are hearing a whirring sound it my guess would be the starter is getting juice, but not engaging the flywheel. It sounds more like the drive gear in the starter has failed. You may want to remove starter and have it tested at local parts store.

You're reading My 1986 Jaguar XJ6 Vanden Plas won't turn over. The battery is good, but when I turn the ignition key I get a low whirring sound. The starter solenoid is good. What next?
