Does aspartame really kill your brain cells?

I used to know, but then I had a diet soda for lunch.... If you inject aspartame directly into your brian, I am sure it would do some harm. However, if ingested in low doses as in a saft drink, aspartame is considered safe. If it caused brain damage, it would not be allowed as a food item.
